Surry Hills Urban Mission (SHUM) is a certified mission under the Scripture Union NSW and it has been running since 2000.
For those of you who are not Sydneysiders, Surry Hills is a suburb close to Central with several needs, one of them being the number of people without homes and living in shelters. SHUM was started because a local church saw the need of its own community and decided to show the love of Jesus outwardly by providing simple food and hot drinks for the homeless with the ultimate goal to share the good news of Jesus. The two main aims of SHUM are to develop relationships with the marginalised and share the Gospel as well as to encourage and educate Christians to evangelise. As SHUM encourages participants from all churches across Sydney to attend, it was WSCCC and CP11's turn to devote every Tuesday evening of last July to fellowship and share the Word of God.
I was part of the July team and it has been an eye-opening experience. We always meet first to pray and have a quick study, then we venture out to Central station to set up, chat with the locals before heading back to church for prayer again. I think what I've learnt is that we all have the same needs - need for relationships, need for love and need for grace. And when one of them turns to Christ, we have the hope in knowing that surely one day 'the last will be first'. Matthew 20:16a.
